WHAT STUDENTS SAY

Sociology 125: Chicago, Growth of a Metropolis/ Urbanism

Hi Dr. Begicevic,

I want to thank you for challenging me this semester, always pushing me to think a little deeper, a little harder, and encouraging me to see things from multiple perspectives. While your class was very challenging for me, I became a better reader and writer through the weekly reflection assignments, observations, and research paper. Most of all, I enjoyed learning about Chicago. So often I think the history of what came before us seems lost, forgotten, or simply not sought out. I've lived here my entire life and it was satisfying to learn the origin and upbringing of Chicago -- it made me feel more connected to my city and proud to be a Chicagoan.  [...] All in all, I want to say thank you for the class. It is one that has and will continue to have a lasting impact on me internally as a Chicagoan, externally as an observer of human behavior, and intellectually as a student. Thank you once again. Sociology 101: Introduction to a Society in a Global Age

Hi Dr. Begicevic,

I wanted to inform you that I changed my career path after taking your class. I was a biology major on the pre-med track; however, I am now a political science major on the pre-law track. Your class really intrigued me as it introduced many problems our society is facing and I realized I wanted to help those people suffering in a different way than medicine. Dec 15, 2019

“I truly enjoyed sociology 101. The class has taught me so much about the world, to be leader, and to produce change for what you believe in. I also learned a lot about the sociological perspective and to be able to put yourself in someone else's shoes. The sociological perspective allows me to see how significant problems are that do not directly affect me and how important it is to use my privilege in the world to produce change for what is right.

Sociology 215: Law and Society

Hi Dr. Begicevic

“I want to thank you for being an inspirational professor to me! I learned so much from your class that I took a lot out of it. In addition, I found a group of friends that I have become very close to because of your class! Thank you so much for that experience! I’m always happy to catch up some time if time allows!”  March 16, 2021

The skills I was able to develop through taking your Sociology and Law in Society classes have helped me succeed both in and out of the workplace. I am forever grateful that I was given the opportunity to take these classes, as it enabled my peers and I to have difficult discussions, educate those around us, and push for change. Although my undergraduate career ended a year ago, I have continued to make an active effort to educate myself on the injustices present in society and hope through my work as an attorney, one day, I will be able to be a voice for those whose are silenced. I can’t thank you enough for the influence you have had on my personal and professional life - you have expanded my horizons and have taught me to look at life through a different lens. Sociology 101: Introduction to a Society in a Global Age

“This sociology course opened my eyes to a lot of issues presented in our world today, that not everyone has the luxury of ignoring. With research in topics of child poverty, human trafficking, and LGBT+ persons in prison systems, I feel as though I have a vaster knowledge in important subjects. On top of that I learned a great deal about the theories and studies that surround each topic; what makes them crucial for society, how they are connected, and what keeps our society in order. I would not have fully understood the concepts of structural functionalism, conflict/critical theory, feminism theory, and more without these assignments and research. I am now able to grasp those concepts and identify them in everyday life.”

I really enjoyed this class. She helped us apply all of the sociological knowledge we were learning to real life problems which I think is such an important thing to do for classes. She really made us think in a way that I had never thought of; she has a very interesting perspective on life, and you can tell she really cares about us and about the substance of the education we are getting. Her emphasis on humans rights was inspiring and motivating, and I have taken away a lot of knowledge from this class. I am so happy I took this class; she is amazing.

Prof. Alma is a well educated professor in her field of study. She makes sure to relate the textbook topics and ideas back to modern day, real life topics and issues. She is not a judgmental person or professor at all. She cares genuinely for her students feedback, ideas, general health, mental health and how well her students retained the information from this course. She genuinely wants her students to take away the importance of her course topic and at least make a difference in her students’ lives and outlook on the subject. Review sessions before exams were offered and she helped well prepare students for her exams which was much h appreciated.
